The factors affecting psychological well-being of the oldest old elderly living alone in rural area

Abstract
With the lengthening of life in old ages, the diversity of old age and different approaches to deal with elderly population in various disciplines have been carefully considered. This study was pursued to find the factors which affect psychological well-being(anxiety, attitude toward own aging, dissatisfaction about loneliness) of the oldest old rural elders living alone regarded as very vulnerable population in many areas including physical health, mental health, social network. The research subjects in this study were all oldest old elderly living alone at 6 townships in Gimhae city, Gyoung Sang Nam Do, and 158 out of 195 collected questionnaires were utilized for analysis. From the results of the study, subjective health status, the numbers of children, the degree of social participation, self-efficacy, the support from family, the support from significant others were found to be the significant factors which affect psychological well-being of the research subjects. However, contrary to the existing study findings, socio-demographic characteristics such as age, gender, economic status did not affect their psychological well-being. Based on the results of the study, the practical strategies and policy implications for increasing psychological well-being of the oldest old elderly living alone in rural areas were suggested.
